From the ground
Look for missing, curled or cracked shingles, dark streaks, sagging lines and granules in the gutters. Binoculars make it easy to check safely.
In the attic
Water stains on the wood, daylight through the roof and damp insulation are all clues. A musty smell can mean a slow leak.
After wind or hail
Storms can damage a roof you cannot see from the yard. A professional look after a big storm is worth it, and photos help with insurance.
Repair or replace
A few damaged shingles can often be repaired. Widespread wear, repeated leaks or an aging roof may point to replacement, and a good roofer will explain both options.
