Scope first
Check what is included, what is left out and what is listed as an allowance. A much shorter estimate often leaves out work that the longer one includes.
Materials by name
Brand, size, grade and color should be listed. Words like standard or basic can hide big differences, so ask for the same materials on every estimate.
Schedule and payments
A start date, a rough finish date and a payment plan tied to progress give you something solid to hold. Ask how changes are priced and what happens if the schedule slips.
Trust the conversation
The best estimate comes from the pro who listened, explained the plan and answered your questions without rushing.
