Plan, permit and order
Drawings, permits and long-lead items such as windows and cabinets come first. Delays here ripple through the whole schedule.
Structure and systems
Framing, plumbing, electrical and heating and cooling go in before walls close. Insulation follows, and then drywall.
Surfaces and finishes
Paint, floors, tile, cabinets and counters come next, usually from the top down so drips and dust do not damage finished work. Trim and hardware are the last fun layer.
Outside and cleanup
Exterior work and landscaping are scheduled around weather. A final walk-through with your contractor catches small details while the crew is still on site.
