Heating and fireplace

Service the heating system, change filters and have the chimney cleaned and checked before the first fire.

Protect pipes and the exterior

Disconnect hoses, shut off outdoor faucets where needed and seal gaps around doors and windows to keep warm air in.

Gutters, roof and trees

Clear leaves from gutters after most have fallen. Trim branches that hang over the roof and check shingles before winter.

Lawn and landscape

Fall is a great time to aerate, overseed and plant trees and shrubs in many climates. Drain and store hoses and put away outdoor furniture.
