Pressure and flow
A sudden drop in water pressure, slow drains in several places or gurgling noises can all point to a hidden problem.
Stains and smells
Brown stains on ceilings, bubbling paint and musty smells often mean a slow leak. Sewer smells can mean a dry trap or a larger issue.
The water bill
A bill that climbs with no change in habits can be a leak. Check the meter with all the water off to see if it moves.
Know your shutoff
Find your main water shutoff before you need it and test it once a year. In an emergency, shutting off the water first limits damage.
